An exceptional and highly desirable Art Deco chainmail wrist purse by Whiting & Davis, representing one of the finest examples of its type we have handled. This elegant accessory was designed for a lady of the period to carry small personal items such as makeup and essentials, combining beauty with refined practicality. The purse features a superbly executed Whiting & Davis chainmail body, richly decorated with soft pastel enamels forming stylised flowers and foliage, flowing into a striking rainbow-toned, pointed fringe finished with a complete and intact “V” tassel trim along the base. The colour work remains vibrant and beautifully balanced, showcasing the exceptional craftsmanship for which Whiting & Davis is renowned. The structured top frame is finished in a warm goldplate tone and fitted with a matching snake chain wrist handle, long enough to sit comfortably around the wrist and fall elegantly into the hand. The clasp and hinge mechanism are both firm and function exactly as intended, opening and closing cleanly. Inside, the purse retains its original mushroom-coloured silk satin lining with an internal pocket. As expected with age, there is some light deterioration: a small separation at the inner seam beneath the clasp and a tiny tear near one hinge. These minor points do not detract from the overall presentation, which remains remarkably strong and visually impressive. Whiting & Davis history: Founded in Massachusetts in the late 19th century, Whiting & Davis became the world’s most celebrated maker of metal mesh handbags. By the 1910s–1930s, their Art Deco designs were synonymous with glamour, innovation, and technical excellence. The company pioneered coloured enamel decoration on mesh, supplied leading department stores and couture houses, and produced pieces worn by Hollywood stars and fashionable women worldwide. Today, original Art Deco Whiting & Davis purses are highly sought after by collectors for their design significance and enduring quality. A rare and striking survivor of the Art Deco era, this purse combines decorative impact, historical importance, and authentic presence, making it an outstanding addition to a serious collection or a dramatic statement accessory.
