Age of Craft – 14th Century Segmented Greaves – Tempered 18 Gauge Steel

$38.25 $65.79
These 14th Century Greaves from Age of Craft are built for hard-hitting HMB sport fighting and will provide substantial protection to most of the lower leg. This splinted style armor is made from tough tempered steel that is 18 gauge in thickness and its three segments are banded together with thick leather straps which are stoutly riveted. A pair of steel buckles with matched leather straps dons and adjusts the greaves to the leg and a front leather tab with holes serves as an anchoring point to support the greaves with an attachment point on an underlying arming garment or other armor piece. Greaves such as these were a good compromise for medieval warriors who needed substantial plate protection at the lower legs without incurring the greater cost of full anatomical greaves. Simpler to make and fit, these segmented greaves fit the bill for essential armor during the developing period of armor development in the 13th and 14th centuries.   Three segment greaves were popular among the knights from Germany of the XIV century thanks to their optimal weight and a great level of protection. Mounted warriors used this armor as additional protection because their shins were especially vulnerable to strikes from the infantry warriors. The historical origin of these greaves can be found on the headstone of Burchard III von Steinberg in the church of St. Martin (Hildesheim, Germany, 1378). The church was seriously damaged during World War II, but it was reconstructed in 1950-1957.
