Age of Craft – HMB Shoulder Armor – Friedrich Victorious – 18-19 Gauge Tempered Spring Steel

This set of plate pauldrons are built for HMB (Historical Medieval Battles) sport combat – the plate lames with rondels are constructed from 18-19 gauge tempered spring steel and are very well articulated for movement. A tab of thick leather with pre-drilled holes allow for this armor to be laced onto a cuirass or gorget; its thick leather strap with metal buckle also fit the armor to the upper arm. These pauldrons are modeled after a 15th century steel plate harness which belonged to Victorious Frederick of the Holy Roman Empire. A finely preserved example, it is preserved in the Kunsthistoriches Museum of Vienna. The shoulder pauldrons of Fredericks armor are symmetrical and feature many segmented lames for excellent movement and articulation. The original armor is shown in the last photo on this page.
