An original late 1930s to early 1940s Art Deco style beret/caplet by Mary L. Turner, New York, crafted in rich black wool felt and featuring an extraordinary beaded ornament to the front. The striking appliqué design is intricately hand-beaded with bronze-tone beads, green tubular glass beads and vivid red accents, forming a stylised Deco motif with wonderful dimensional detail. The workmanship reflects the glamour and craftsmanship associated with late 1930s American millinery, where bold embellishment and sculptural form were central to fashion. Labelled “Mary L. Turner – Buffalo,” this piece originates from a New York millinery house active during the mid-20th century. American milliners of this period often produced small-scale, high-quality designs, and regional labels such as Mary L. Turner are increasingly sought after for their individuality and hand-finished detailing. Designed to sit close to the head, it fastens in classic beret fashion with a hat pin or small comb. Internal circumference: 22.5” (57cm). Marked size 22. In excellent condition for its age, with the felt retaining good structure and the beadwork remaining secure and vibrant. A refined and distinctive example of American Art Deco era millinery.
